Battenberg Castle
Battenberg, Germany, Germany
Battenberg Castle (Burg Battenberg) is a 13th-century ruined hill fortress near Battenberg village in Germany's Bad Dürkheim district, Rhineland-Palatinate, built around 1287 by Count Frederick III of Leiningen to control the Eckbach valley alongside nearby Neuleiningen Castle.
Strategically positioned on a steep hill spur at 284 meters elevation with natural defenses on three sides and a former moat on the fourth, it features surviving outer walls, a western gate tower, central battery tower with embrasure, vaulted cellar, and 16th-century staircase tower now serving as an eastern pavilion.
Destroyed by French troops in 1689 during the War of the Palatine Succession, the Leiningen family seat remained in partial use until 1747 before falling into picturesque ruin, offering Rhine Plain views and geological curiosities like nearby "lightning pipes."
