Batzdorf Castle
Klipphausen, Germany, Germany
Schloss Batzdorf, nestled in the hills above the Elbe River in Batzdorf near Klipphausen, Saxony, Germany, traces its origins to a Romanesque core from the late 15th century, with major Renaissance expansions around 1580 by the von Miltitz family who owned it from 1437 to 1880.
Ernst von Miltitz added the Knights' Hall with its coat-of-arms frieze and a turreted portal in 1586, while a Baroque chapel was built in 1705 as a burial site for Moritz Heinrich von Miltitz; it later passed to the von Friesen-Miltitz family until their expropriation in 1945 amid post-war land reforms.
After serving as housing, a children's camp, and facing near-demolition in the 1980s, it was rescued in 1983 by restorer Joseph Schmidt and artist Bettina Zimmermann, now lovingly restored by Schloss Batzdorf e.V. as a vibrant hub for artists' ateliers, workshops, and cultural events.
