The Bavarian Alps form the northeastern section of Germany's Northern Limestone Alps, stretching about 110 kilometers along the Austria-Germany border from the Lechtaler Alps eastward to the Inn River bend near Kufstein.

Dominated by rugged limestone peaks like Zugspitze at 2,962 meters—Germany's highest—the range includes sub-groups such as the Wetterstein, Karwendel, Berchtesgaden, and Chiemgau Alps, shaped by Ice Age glaciers into cirques, U-shaped valleys, and lakes amid dense forests and meadows.
