Bergen in Wanzleben-Börde, Germany, is known for Burg Wanzleben, one of the largest lowland castles in Europe, notable for its thousand-year-old keep standing over 30 meters tall. The castle dates back to the 10th century and was historically owned by the Lords of Wanzleben, who acted as feudatories for the monastery of Gandersheim from the 12th to 14th centuries.

Due to financial difficulties, they sold the castle to the Archbishops of Magdeburg in 1378, who later transformed it from a defensive fortress into a residential castle by 1578. The estate became a Prussian domain in the 18th century, and the Kühne family leased it from 1778.

Over centuries, famous guests such as King Frederick the Great and Emperor Napoleon stayed there. After World War II, the castle was appropriated by the Red Army and used for various community purposes during the GDR era. It was purchased in 1993 by a descendant of the original tenant, restored, and now operates as a hotel, conference center, and restaurant, preserving its rich historical legacy.
