Bergenhus
Norway, Norway
Bergenhus Fortress is one of Norway's oldest and best-preserved fortifications, located in Bergen harbor and originally built in the 1240s when Bergen served as the kingdom's capital, enclosing the medieval royal seat called Holmen. It features Haakon's Hall, a grand 13th-century stone banquet hall constructed by King Haakon Haakonsson for feasts and ceremonies, alongside the Rosenkrantz Tower rebuilt in the 1560s by Scottish masons as a residence with dungeons and cannon positions. Expanded through the 1600s into a major military complex with ramparts linking Holmen and Sverresborg, it resisted attacks like the 1665 Battle of Vågen and later served German forces in World War II, now functioning as a cultural heritage site with museums and scenic grounds.
