Birjand Fort
Birjand, Iran, Iran
Birjand Fort, also known as Birjand Castle or Arg-e Birjand, is a historic military fortress located on Mahour Hill overlooking the city of Birjand in South Khorasan province, eastern Iran.
Originally constructed during the Safavid era and rebuilt in the Qajar period, the fort was designed as a defensive stronghold to protect the city from invasions, particularly by Turkmen and Uzbek forces. Made from brick, mud, and adobe, it features a regular quadrilateral layout covering over 3,000 square meters, with multiple robust towers equipped with loopholes for observation and defense.
The walls include architectural features allowing guards to monitor the ramparts and prevent enemy scaling. The interior was built to sustain long sieges, with stored water and food reserves. The fort also contains an underground tunnel network connecting it with other key local citadels. Serving as a refuge for residents during times of conflict, it transformed from a military fortress to a cultural symbol reflecting the region's historic resilience.
Today, Birjand Fort is well-preserved, offering panoramic views of the city and standing as a significant national heritage site that attracts visitors interested in Iran's architectural and historical legacy.
