Verified Bjni Fortress

Armenia, Armenia

Bjni Fortress is a medieval Armenian fortress in the village of Bjni in the Kotayk Province, about 20 km south of Yerevan, built on a high mesa that splits the village and divides the Hrazdan River valley on either side.

It was constructed in the 9th–10th centuries by the royal Pahlavuni family of the Bagratuni dynasty and later reinforced by the commander Vasak Holum Pahlavuni, giving it a strong defensive position with steep cliffs and walls up to 15–20 meters high on the western and southern sides, while the less accessible eastern side is about 100 meters lower.

The fortress, known as the “Great Fortress” (Mets Berd), functions as part of the wider ancient settlement of Bjni and includes the 9th–10th‑century Surb Khach church, a 10th‑century palace, a cistern, and the “Lower Fortress” (Storin Berd) dating from the 10th to 15th century, along with a secret passage linking parts of the fortress with the lower settlements and the nearby Bjni Monastery.

Bjni was a major center of Armenian calligraphy and manuscript production in the Middle Ages, and the fortress played an important military and administrative role until it was devastated by the Turko‑Mongol conqueror Timur (Tamerlane) in 1387–1388, after which it was gradually abandoned and now survives as a protected historical and cultural monument with visible ruins of walls, towers, churches, and residential buildings that can be reached by car from Yerevan and explored without a guided tour.
