The Black Fortress, locally known as Սև բերդ and located in Gyumri, Armenia, is a circular fortress built of black tuff stone beginning in 1834.

It was constructed by Russian forces shortly after Gyumri became part of the Russian Empire following the Treaty of Gulistan. The fortress was designed as a strategic stronghold along the border with Turkey during a period of ongoing conflict. It features a sophisticated defense system with high, narrow openings for rifle fire, concrete artillery points, and a drainage system to protect the walls.

Originally, it served both as a military base and a prison and later as an artillery warehouse. Though never besieged, it played a vital role in Russian military campaigns against the Ottoman Empire. Today, the fortress offers panoramic views of Gyumri and the surrounding mountains, and it has been transformed into a cultural landmark with ongoing restoration efforts.

Visitors can also see an amphitheater within the fortress, now used for concerts and events, making it an important historical and cultural site in Armenia.
