Blankenheim Castle
Blankenheim, Germany, Germany
Blankenheim Castle in Blankenheim, Germany, is a prominent Baroque schloss built around 1115 by Gerhard I above the Ahr River spring in the Eifel mountains, originally as a medieval hill fortress that became the ancestral seat of the House of Blankenheim, later Counts of Manderscheid-Blankenheim.
Remodeled multiple times, including a 15th-century rebuild by Gerhard VIII into a palace with gardens, orangery, and park, it faced decline during the 1794 French invasion when the family fled, standing empty until Prussian safety works in 1894 and conversion into a youth hostel by 1936.
Today, the imposing structure dominates the townscape, offering overnight stays amid historic walls, panoramic views, and nearby archaeological hints of a prior Roman fort. This scenic view shows the castle crowning a hill above Blankenheim's half-timbered houses and church in a winter setting.
