Blankenstein Castle in Hattingen, Germany, sits on a rocky ridge south of the Ruhr River, ordered built in 1226 by Count Adolf I of Mark and completed around 1243 under Truchsess Ludolf von Bönen.
Expanded over two centuries by the Counts of Mark, including the Graf-Engelbert-Turm by Engelbert I in the 13th century, it became one of the county's key fortresses by 1425 before Spanish occupation in 1614 and decay during the Thirty Years' War.
Demolished by order of Elector Frederick William in 1662, only the tower and curtain wall remnants survive; rebuilt as a factory in the 19th century, it passed to Bochum in 1922 and now offers tours with views over the region.
