Blithewold Mansion, Gardens and Arboretum in Bristol, Rhode Island, is a historic summer estate established in the late 19th century by coal magnate Augustus Van Wickle as a peaceful retreat overlooking Narragansett Bay.

The property features an Arts & Crafts-style mansion rebuilt in 1907 after a fire destroyed the original house and showcases 33 acres of carefully designed gardens and a nationally recognized arboretum. The landscape, designed primarily by John DeWolf from 1895 to 1912, includes stone-walled gardens, a shrub walk, a water garden, a rose garden, and one of the largest and oldest bamboo groves in New England.

Blithewold’s grounds display a rich collection of native and exotic trees and shrubs, including giant sequoias and flowering specimens, with plant labels providing educational context. The estate hosts annual events like Daffodil Days, drawing thousands of blooming bulbs in spring, and serves as a cultural venue for weddings and community programs.

Now managed by a nonprofit, Blithewold remains a treasured embodiment of Country Place Era design, blending natural beauty, horticultural excellence, and historical preservation.​
