Blue Bay Beach
Mauritius, Mauritius
Blue Bay Beach is a stunning stretch of white sand on Mauritius’s southeast coast near Mahébourg, famous for its incredibly clear, vivid blue waters that layer from light to dark and one of the island’s best snorkeling spots. The beach is the gateway to Blue Bay Marine Park, a 353-hectare protected reserve that contains a natural “Coral Garden” with over 50 coral species, mangroves, sea grasses, algae, and hundreds of fish including butterfly fish, damselfish, clownfish, angelfish, wrasse, and occasionally turtles and dolphins. You can snorkel for free right from the public beach in the designated swimming zone where motorboats are banned, or take glass-bottom boat tours to admire the underwater world without getting wet. The beach offers soft white sand shaded by casuarina trees, basic public facilities like restrooms and showers, and a diving center for sea activities such as scuba diving, windsurfing, and parasailing. It gets quite busy and lively on weekends when locals come for picnics and music, but weekdays are quieter for peaceful relaxation, and nearby food vendors and only one restaurant called Le Bougainville serve local street food and snacks. Blue Bay is also a great spot for collecting beautiful seashells and offers fabulous views of the small island Ile Des Deux Cocos.
