Blumenstein Castle, Palatinate
Schönau, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, Germany
Blumenstein Castle, or Burgruine Blumenstein, near Schönau in Rhineland-Palatinate's Palatinate Forest, Germany, is a high-altitude 13th-century rock castle ruin built on a narrow sandstone spur, first referenced in 1332 with Anselm von Batzendorf as its lord.
After a 1347 feud with the Fleckensteins, it split among Zweibrücken counts, the von Dahn family, and others, likely destroyed in the 1525 Peasants' War before passing through Hanau-Lichtenberg, Hesse, Speyer bishopric, and Bavaria to modern Rhineland-Palatinate ownership.
Featuring a signature buckelquader shield wall, rock-cut stairs linking upper and middle sections, and valley views, it underwent 19th–20th-century safety restorations like railings, now serving as a hiking destination on trails like the Deutsch-Französischer Burgenweg.
