Borregaard Hovedgård - Varemottak

Sarpsborg, Norway, Norway

Borregaard Hovedgård is a historic royal and manor estate in Sarpsborg, Norway, founded around 1016 by King Olav Haraldsson (later Saint Olav) as a stone, timber, and turf fortress called Borg near Sarpefossen waterfall, serving as a winter residence and administrative center for Norwegian kings until 1312 when Håkon V transferred it to noble Havtore Jonsson, transitioning it to private herregård ownership. Much of the original site slid into the Glomma River during a 1702 landslide under owner Jens Werenskiold, who rebuilt the main house higher up, leading to its rococo and neoclassical expansions amid agriculture, forestry, and timber trade before English investors acquired it in 1889 for the Kellner Partington Paper Pulp Company, tying it to the adjacent Borregaard industrial complex. Used as executive housing until 1976, it now operates as a heritage hotel with preserved art collections, including Peder Balke's Sarpefossen painting, hosting conferences, weddings, and tours of its medieval-to-modern legacy.
