BOT Botanical Garden
Dresden, Germany, Germany
The BOT Botanical Garden, also known as the Dresden Botanical Garden or Botanischer Garten der Technischen Universität Dresden, is a 3.25-hectare municipal botanical garden maintained by Dresden University of Technology, located at Stübelallee 2 in the northwestern section of the Großer Garten in Dresden, Saxony, Germany.
The garden was created in 1889 by Carl Georg Oscar Drude and officially opened in 1893, continuing Dresden's botanical garden tradition that began in 1820 with Professor Ludwig Reichenbach's first garden. Today it houses approximately 10,000 plant species from around the world, making it a botanical world tour in a compact space, with notable collections including about 800 species of annual plants and wild plants from Saxony and Thuringia.
The garden features three to five greenhouses covering about 1,000 square meters that display tropical plants, towering palms, delicate orchids, cacti, leafy ferns, and colorful flowers in carefully maintained microclimates. A unique feature is its collection of tree fossils, ancient remnants offering a tangible connection to Earth's distant past and adding geological intrigue to the botanical experience.
The outdoor gardens are arranged primarily by geographical origin, allowing visitors to explore plant communities from various global regions, and the garden includes paved paths, squirrels, and well-labeled plants. Entry is free, the garden is open daily year-round from 8 am to 6 pm, and it hosts workshops, guided tours, and special events for deeper engagement with nature.
