Botanic Garden
Bochum, Germany, Germany
The Botanical Garden of Ruhr University Bochum, also known as Botanischer Garten Bochum, is one of Germany's ten most prestigious botanical gardens, covering 13 hectares on the southern slope of the Ruhr University campus near the Lottental and Kemnader See in Bochum, North Rhine-Westphalia.
Founded in 1968 for university research and teaching, particularly in the evolution of flowering plants from conifers, the garden opened to the public in 1971 and has been continuously expanded with special features including a tropical house (1976), desert house (1988), Chinese garden (1990), and savannah houses (2000). The garden features over 3,500 square meters of greenhouse space with three main houses accessible through a central entrance hall, including a tropical house with exotic rainforest vegetation, a desert house with succulents, and savannah houses.
Highlights include the geobotanical section in the south replicating vegetation from Europe, Asia, and America, an alpine garden, useful plant displays, and the Chinese Garden "Qian Yuan" (Land of Peach Blossom), built in 1990 as a gift from collaborating partner Tongji University of Shanghai with traditional Chinese design and craftsmanship.
