The Botanical Garden in Oslo (Botanisk hage) is Norway’s oldest botanical garden, founded in 1814 and located in the Tøyen area. It belongs to the Natural History Museum of the University of Oslo and serves as both a research site for plant conservation and a public green space. The garden features about 4,500 to 7,500 plant species from around the world, organized into thematic areas including an extensive arboretum with roughly 1,800 trees and shrubs planted systematically by family, a Rock Garden showing mountain flora, a Viking Garden, a medicinal plants and spices zone, and a specially designed Scent Garden for visitors with visual or cognitive disabilities. Two historic Victorian greenhouses—the Palm House (1868) and Victoria House (1876)—house exotic tropical plants such as palm trees, orchids, fig trees, cacao, and insectivorous species.
