Verified Botanical Garden of Rome

Rome, Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, Italy, Italy

The Botanical Garden of Rome, also known as Orto Botanico di Roma or Orto Botanico dell'Università di Roma "La Sapienza", is one of the largest botanical gardens in Italy, covering 12 hectares (30 acres) in the heart of Rome between Via della Lungara and the Janiculum Hill.

Located within the historic park of Villa Corsini (once the residence of Christine of Sweden) and partly on the archaeological site of Horti Getae (formerly the Baths of Septimius Severus), the garden has occupied its current location since 1883 and is now operated by Sapienza University of Rome's Department of Environmental Biology.

The garden features more than 3,500 cultivated plant species from all over the world, including secular and monumental trees, gymnosperms, bamboo, Roman wood, cedars of Lebanon, ferns, palms, rose gardens, citrus trees, and grasses spanning centuries of botanical diversity. It houses three greenhouses: the Tropical greenhouse for tropical and subtropical plants, the monumental greenhouse featuring orchids, euphorbias, and climbing plants, and the Corsini greenhouse where succulents are grown.
