Verified Botanischer Garten Chemnitz

Chemnitz, Germany, Germany

The Botanischer Garten Chemnitz is a 12-hectare municipal botanical garden located about 3 km northwest of Chemnitz city center in Saxony, Germany, at Leipziger Straße 147, founded in 1898 by garden director Otto Werner and school director Paul Säurich on a 1-hectare site and expanded in 1933 with an additional 1.75 hectares of orchards.

The garden was badly damaged during World War II but reconstructed in the 1950s, with today's organization established in 1996 and new greenhouses built in 1998 and 2002. It uniquely combines three areas—a botanical garden, school biology center, and nature conservation center—making it the only such facility in Germany, with a special focus on educating children and young people as the "Station for Young Natural Researchers".

The outdoor areas display primarily Central European plant families and crop plants from around the world, replicating natural habitats including heath, dune, steppe, moors, ponds, and 20 different forest communities, along with collections of medicinal, aromatic, and annual and perennial flowers. The greenhouses contain approximately 800 species including tropical and Mediterranean plants, cacti and succulents, carnivorous plants, pineapples, banana, coffee, vanilla, oranges, and rattan in separate tropical and Mediterranean houses.
