Founded in 1926 by a teachers' association on the site of an former stone quarry as a school garden, it became publicly accessible as a municipal botanical garden in 1956 under the Wandsbek district administration. A greenhouse displays tropical plants, and the garden operates without chemical pesticides, following the principle of "living with plants rather than plants for us". Entry is free, the park is open daily from 7 am until dusk, and the greenhouse is open Monday through Thursday from 7 am to 3 pm and Friday from 7 am to 2 pm. The site attracts approximately 500 visitors daily and is recognized as a historically significant garden monument.
