Botestagno, also known as Castello di Botestagno or Podestagno, is the site of a medieval fortress located a few kilometers north of Cortina d’Ampezzo in the Dolomites of northern Italy.

The castle occupied a strategic position above the Boite Valley, where important routes between Venice, Cadore, and the Tyrol passed through the mountains. The fortress likely originated between the early medieval period and the 12th century and served as a defensive stronghold, customs point, and resting place for merchants traveling along the historic Alemagna route.

Over the centuries it came under the control of several powers, including the Patriarchate of Aquileia, Venice, and the Habsburgs. Today, only ruins remain, but the site is a popular destination for short walks and historical visits. Visitors can enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding valleys and learn about the castle’s role in controlling one of the most important mountain passages in the region.
