Breitungen/Werra is a municipality in Thuringia's Schmalkalden-Meiningen district, Germany, situated on the Werra River southeast of Bad Salzungen and bridging the Thuringian Forest and Rhön regions.

First documented in 933 as "Bretinga" in a charter by King Heinrich I describing the boundaries of the Breitungen Mark—a 280-square-kilometer area that served as a political, judicial, and cultural hub in the 10th century—it grew from three settlements: Alemannic Altenbreitungen around 450, Frankish Königsbreitungen (later Frauenbreitungen after a 1150 nunnery), and Burgbreitungen from a royal palatinate destroyed by Hungarians circa 915.

Once spanning parts of Hessen and Saxony before modern Thuringia, it features landmarks like the Romanesque Benedictine church ruins from 1112, metalworking industries, and historical events including Emperor Heinrich IV's 1075 army assembly.
