Breuberg Castle
Breuberg, Germany, Germany
Breuberg Castle is one of Germany's best-preserved medieval fortresses, rising majestically above the Mümling Valley in the Odenwald region of Hesse near the town of Breuberg.
Built around 1200 during the Staufen era by the Lords of Lützelbach—who took their name from it—on foundations possibly linked to Fulda Abbey, it evolved from a Romanesque core castle with a mighty ashlar keep and ring walls into a Ganerbenburg shared by four noble families, later fortified by the Counts of Wertheim with towers, gun platforms, and an 85-meter-deep well.
Never fully destroyed despite wars, its layered architecture spans 12th to 17th centuries, now housing a museum on its history, a youth hostel, and outdoor areas freely accessible for tours and events.
