Brunswick Palace
Braunschweig, Germany, Germany
Brunswick Palace, known in German as Braunschweiger Schloss or Braunschweiger Residenzschloss, was the main ducal residence in the city of Braunschweig in Lower Saxony, Germany, standing on the Bohlweg in the town center.
First built in the early 18th century under Hermann Korb and later completely rebuilt in the early 19th century by Carl Theodor Ottmer after a fire, the palace served as the seat of the Brunswick dukes from 1753 until the monarchy ended in 1918. Heavily damaged in air raids during the Second World War, the ruined structure was completely demolished in 1960.
The site was turned into a park that was later cleared in the 2000s for a modern shopping complex called the Schloss‑Arkaden. Today a reconstructed western façade in the style of Ottmer’s palace forms the front of this building, preserving the silhouette of the former Brunswick Palace as a symbolic reference to the city’s former ducal seat.
