Bucu
Germany, Germany
Bucu is a historic hill island in Lübeck, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, surrounded by the Trave and Wakenitz rivers, site of a medieval Slavic ringwall castle (Wallburg) likely built in the 8th century as a key stronghold and trade hub. After the decline of nearby Liubice, Slavic prince Kruto developed it further, but in 1143 Count Adolf II of Holstein founded the city of Lübeck there, naming it after Liubice; the castle was largely demolished by 1227 to build the Burgkloster, a fortified Dominican monastery atop its ruins, with few physical remains surviving today.
