Bunter Garten
Mönchengladbach, Germany, Germany
The Bunter Garten is a popular 30-hectare urban park in the city center of Mönchengladbach, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, stretching from the Kaiserpark on Bismarckstraße to the main cemetery and connecting the Kaiser-Friedrich-Halle on Hohenzollernstraße with the Hauptfriedhof and the Jahrtausendwald.
The park consists of a continuous, narrow green strip only interrupted by Schürenweg and is divided into three main sections: the Kaiserpark (3.2 hectares created in 1890 with over 100-year-old trees), the Bunter Garten itself (approximately 16 hectares), and the Botanischer Garten (5 hectares). The botanical garden features a rock garden, herb garden, and an apothecary garden (Apothekergarten) with over 200 different medicinal plants used for training pharmacy and drogist apprentices.
A special highlight is the Duft- und Tastgarten (scent and touch garden) specifically designed for blind people, along with a magnificent old coast redwood tree. The park offers numerous attractions including a large children's playground with water features on Bettrather Straße, the Voliere (aviary) with over 200 native and exotic birds including parrots, parakeets, and canaries opposite St. Barbara Kloster, and many scattered artworks and fountains maintained by the city's green spaces department.
