Burg Alsenborn (Dieburg)
Enkenbach-Alsenborn, Germany, Germany
Burg Alsenborn, locally also called Dieburg, is the remains of a small medieval Turmhügelburg (tower‑hill castle or Motte) on a low, roughly 50‑meter‑wide and 3‑meter‑high hill in the Wiesentälchen “Am Brunnen” near the Alsenz spring, east of the old village core of Alsenborn in the municipality of Enkenbach‑Alsenborn, Rhineland‑Palatinate, Germany.
It was built in the 12th century, likely during the Salian–Staufen period, as a simple water‑surrounded motte with a strong central stone tower and a surrounding ring wall, and geological soundings and excavations in 1935 and again in 1965–66 revealed the outlines of the tower, the inner wall, and a small western building complex, as well as traces of a wider water‑filled ditch.
Over time the site was partially disturbed by gardening and later by the construction of the local swimming pool directly on the castle grounds, so today only the flattened hill and some faint traces of the moat survive in the landscape, while the original stone structures have been creatively reconstructed with gabion walls and visible masonry outlines integrated into the modern leisure area around the spring and the pool, allowing visitors to walk freely around the historic site and still grasp its former layout even though it no longer looks like a traditional castle ruin.
