Burg Altweilnau
Weilrod, Germany, Germany
Burg Altweilnau is a medieval hilltop castle ruin overlooking the Weiltal valley at 360 meters elevation in Altweilnau, part of Weilrod municipality in Germany's Hochtaunus district, Hesse.
First mentioned in 1208 and built around 1200 by the Counts of Diez—who later styled themselves Counts of Weilnau—it originally featured seven towers as a strategic stronghold, remaining inhabited until 1563 before abandonment by 1608 and decay during the Thirty Years' War.
Today, well-preserved remnants include a robust round bergfried tower with an observation platform, parts of the ring wall, and a Gothic gate tower from 1340 with a steep slate hipped roof, offering panoramic views and hosting cultural events like medieval markets.
