Burg Apenburg
Germany, Germany
Burg Apenburg is the ruin of a medieval lowlands castle in Apenburg-Winterfeld, Altmarkkreis Salzwedel, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, built around 1200 on an artificial hill amid swampy terrain to guard the Purnitz pass along trade routes from Salzwedel to Gardelegen and Braunschweig to Osterburg.
Covering 2000 square meters within a 6-meter-high stone wall, moat, and rampart, it was granted in 1351 to the von der Schulenburg family—who ruled from nearby Beetzendorf since 1204—and completed by 1363, with major renovations from 1572-1584 after becoming dilapidated by 1550.
Surviving elements include a 25-30 meter bergfried tower converted to an observation post in 1840, a pointed arch gateway, wall fragments, and a neogothic family chapel added in 1860, listed as a cultural monument near the village's historic church.
