Burg Baldenstein
Gammertingen, Germany, Germany
Ruine Baldenstein near Gammertingen, Germany, is the atmospheric ruin of a medieval spur castle built around 1050-1100 by the Counts of Gammertingen as their likely ancestral seat on a rocky spur at 712 meters above the Fehla Valley.
Destroyed by fire around 1150 without military conflict and never rebuilt, it features remnants of a 19x15-meter donjon with 2-meter-thick walls, an eastern bergfried possibly serving as a gate tower, and a neck ditch, with excavations uncovering game pieces, glass shards, and metal spurs now displayed in exhibits.
Excavated in 1933 and conserved from 1963-1965, the site attracts hikers for its scenic Swabian Alb location above the former Baldenstein hamlet—donated to Zwiefalten Abbey in 1140—and ties to the extinct comital line whose successors were the Counts of Veringen.
