Burg Balduinstein
Germany, Germany
Burg Balduinstein is a medieval spur castle ruin overlooking the Lahn River near Balduinstein in Germany's Rhineland-Palatinate, built rapidly in 1319-1320 by Trier's Archbishop Balduin of Luxembourg as a strategic counter-fortress against the rival Schaumburg Castle during regional power struggles.
Featuring an innovative "new style" oval design with thick walls up to 1.6 meters, a multi-story palas residence, small corner tower, neck ditch, and later expansions like a Vorburg with towers by 1340, it served as an administrative seat without a traditional bergfried keep.
Expanded over centuries before decay set in, its preserved remnants now form a youth hostel and hiking site with scenic valley views.
