Burg Bilstein (Eschwege)
Eschwege, Germany, Germany
Burg Bilstein near Eschwege in Germany is a vanished hilltop castle ruin perched on the 284-meter Bilstein peak overlooking the dramatic Höllental gorge of the Berka river, west of Albungen.
Built likely around 1100 on earlier remnants by the influential Wigger family—who from 1140 named themselves Counts of Bilstein after the site—it served as their seat until the male line ended in 1306.
Rebuilt in 1120 by Count Rugger II with a 40 by 25 meter layout, it faced siege and damage in 1291 by Landgrave Albrecht of Thuringia over charges of banditry, later managed by Hessian castellans before falling into ruin by the 16th century, with minor repairs in 1559-1562 and demolition in 1594. Today, scant wall remnants, cellar traces, and a well persist amid a protected forest, offering a quiet hike into medieval history.
