Burg Fürstenstein
Eschwege, Germany, Germany
Burg Fürstenstein near Eschwege-Albungen in Germany is a medieval hill castle on a spur above the Werra River, likely built in the early 14th century by the Counts of Bilstein as a border stronghold.
First documented around 1264 under Braunschweig control and definitively in 1327 as a Hessian possession, it passed through various noble hands including the von Diede family who held it until 1807, featuring a late-Gothic rectangular residential tower measuring 8 by 13 meters with three stone stories and a timber-framed top, plus a small chapel added around 1600.
Today the private estate includes partial ring walls, a forge, two cavalier houses, and a 17th-century farmstead in the outer bailey, though it remains closed to visitors amid the scenic Gobert hills.
