Burg Godesburg in Bonn, Germany, crowns the 101-meter Godesberg volcanic hill overlooking the Rhine, with origins tied to an 8th-century cult site and construction starting in 1210 under Archbishop Dietrich I of Cologne to assert regional power.

Expanded through the 13th and 14th centuries with a 32-meter cylindrical bergfried tower, moats, chapel, and residence, it withstood sieges like one in 1275 before being mined and largely destroyed by Bavarian forces in 1583 during the Cologne War.

Romanticized as a ruin in 19th-century art, it was gifted to Bad Godesberg in 1891, restored in the 1950s-60s by architect Gottfried Böhm into a hotel and restaurant, preserving the medieval core amid panoramic views.
