Burg Gollenfels
Dörrebach, Germany
Burg Gollenfels is a hilltop castle located on the Gollenfels rock near Dörrebach in Germany's Hunsrück region. Originally built around the 10th or 11th century, it likely stands on the foundations of a former Roman fortress that protected an important road between Mainz and Trier.
The castle was first documented in 1156 and played a strategic role due to its elevated, rocky position overlooking local valleys. It was destroyed in 1614 by Spanish troops during a regional succession conflict but was rebuilt in 1619.
Though it suffered a battle attack in 1793, it was not destroyed again, losing its military importance afterward. Later, the castle served as soldiers' quarters until shortly after World War II. Its ruins today preserve significant portions of the original structure and reflect the historical military and regional significance of the site.
