Burg Groitzsch
Groitzsch, Germany, Germany
Burg Groitzsch is a medieval castle ruin perched on a strategic hill overlooking the White Elster River valley in Groitzsch, Saxony, Germany, recognized as one of the oldest stone structures in the region with construction starting around 1070.
Count Wiprecht of Groitzsch acquired it in 1073/74 through a land exchange, making it his residence and a key fortress during political conflicts, including battles like Hohenmölsen in 1080 and later sieges up to its destruction phases around 1294–1307.
Archaeological digs reveal five building phases from the 10th to 13th centuries, featuring a main fortified area (150x100m) with steep drops, a dry moat now partly a road, and an outer bailey now housing a cemetery and church remnants; today, it's a free-access site with a lapidarium, round chapel ruins, and nearby vineyard.
