Burg Grüningen
Pohlheim, Germany, Germany
Burg Grüningen is a restored medieval water castle ruin situated in the center of Grüningen, a district of Pohlheim in Hesse's Gießen district, Germany.
Likely constructed between the 12th and 13th centuries as a lowland fortress with a square 27-meter layout, 2-meter-thick ring walls integrated into the town fortifications, and hints of a surrounding moat, it was first documented in 1394 during the town's receipt of market and city rights under the Lords of Falkenstein-Münzenberg.
Plundered and largely destroyed by Spanish troops in 1634 during the Thirty Years' War, it decayed until major restoration began in 1983 by the local heritage association, earning a Hessian volunteer award in 2008; today it features two vaulted cellars, a northwest tower serving as a viewpoint, and a rebuilt southern palas hall.
