Burg Gutenfels
Kaub, Germany, Germany
Burg Gutenfels is a medieval hilltop castle overlooking the Rhine River in Kaub, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, built around 1220 by the Lords of Falkenstein-Münzenberg to control river tolls alongside the nearby Pfalzgrafenstein island fortress.
First documented in 1257, it joined the Electorate of the Palatinate in 1277 and earned its name "Gutenfels" (good rock) after withstanding a 1504 siege by Hessian forces during the War of the Succession of Landshut. Partially demolished by Napoleonic orders in 1807, its romantic ruins now offer guided tours, wine tastings in vaulted cellars, and stunning valley views as a popular UNESCO Rhine Valley landmark.
