Burg Hammerstein
Hammerstein, Germany, Germany
Burg Hammerstein near Hammerstein in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, is the oldest verifiable castle in the Middle Rhine Valley, built in the 10th century by the Conradines and first documented as an imperial Reichsburg in 1002.
It housed the burgraves of Hammerstein until around 1417, served as a toll station from 1071 and mint from 1215, and stored Holy Roman Empire regalia under emperors like Heinrich IV and Heinrich V before their transfer to Trifels in 1125.
Besieged by Emperor Heinrich II in 1020 over a disputed marriage, it changed hands to the Electorate of Trier in 1374, endured occupations in the Thirty Years' War, and was slighted in 1654 by retreating troops, with ruins passing to Prussia in 1815 and now privately owned since 1893.
