Burg Hauneck
Germany, Germany
Burg Hauneck is a medieval castle ruin atop the 524-meter Stoppelsberg mountain in Haunetal, Hesse, Germany, constructed in the 14th century from local basalt stone by the knights of Haune to guard the Antsanvia trade route.
First documented around 1397, it fell to Hessian forces in 1409 after partial destruction, later serving as an administrative center until rebuilt post-1469 war damage and abandoned by 1572 amid the Thirty Years' War.
The square-layout remnants include a central Romanesque bergfried tower on hexagonal basalt columns, up to 15-meter-high ring walls, a southeast gatehouse, and hiking trails offering views over the Kuppenrhön and Seulingswald forests.
