Burg Heid
Schillingen, Germany, Germany
Burg Heid near Schillingen in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, originated in the 14th century as a fortified farmstead on the border of Schillingen and Heddert territories, owned by the Trier Cathedral Chapter in the 18th century.
Acquired via auction in 1804 by art collector Peter Job Hermes, it was transformed around 1850 by his nephew Johann Peter Job Nell into a moated manor resembling a knightly castle, complete with twin gatehouse towers bearing the von Nell coat of arms, a tall round bergfried tower, a matching stable block, and an artificial pond suggesting a water castle.
The von Nell family abandoned farming in 1932, selling to industrialist Achter whose descendants still manage the private estate today as a working farm with preserved Romantic-era features.
