Burg Heiligenberg
Felsberg, Germany, Germany
Burg Heiligenberg is a ruined medieval hilltop castle atop the 393-meter basalt Heiligenberg near Felsberg-Gensungen in Hesse, Germany, offering sweeping panoramic views across North Hessian landscapes to places like Bad Wildungen, Fritzlar, Waldeck, and even Kassel.
Built between 1180 and 1186 by Archbishop Konrad of Mainz as a strategic outpost against Thuringia and to protect Fritzlar, it faced destruction in 1232 by Konrad of Thuringia and again in 1273 by Heinrich I of Hesse, with partial rebuilds in 1247 and the 14th century before gradual decay set in.
Today, the freely accessible site features a preserved round bergfried tower, reconstructed gate, picnic spots, and integration into the Ars Natura art trail, making it a favored hiking destination steeped in Iron Age fortification roots and regional history.
