Burg Hofen
Stuttgart, Germany, Germany
Burg Hofen in Stuttgart, Germany, is the only surviving castle ruin within the city limits, perched at about 240 meters above the Neckar River in the Hofen district to guard a key river ford, ferry crossing, and trade route.
Built around 1250 next to an existing village by knights like Luithart von Mühlhausen—whose son Kuno adopted the name von Hofen—it was burned by Swedish forces in the Thirty Years' War, partially demolished in 1783 with stones reused for local buildings like St. Barbara Church, and sold to the city in 1999 for restoration.
Accessible via a short walk up Wolfgangstraße from free parking near the church, its prominent shield wall remnants offer a peaceful vantage point amid greenery, ideal for hikes from nearby Max-Eyth-See.
