Burg Hohenwerfen
Werfen, Austria, Germany
Burg Hohenwerfen is a striking medieval fortress perched on a 155-meter rock above the Salzach Valley in Werfen, Austria.
Built between 1075 and 1078 by Archbishop Gebhard of Salzburg during the Investiture Controversy as a bulwark against Emperor Henry IV, it served as a military stronghold, residence, and prison for the prince-archbishops, with expansions in the 12th, 15th, and 16th centuries including bastions and a central keep.
After falling into ruin post-1803 secularization, it was restored in the 19th century by Archduke Johann and later Eugene, surviving a 1931 fire before becoming a tourist site in 1987 with falconry shows and panoramic views.
