Burg Hohlenfels
Germany, Germany
Burg Hohlenfels is a dramatic medieval rock castle ruin perched on a steep, hollow limestone cliff 60 meters above the Hohlenfelsbach Valley near Hahnstätten and Mudershausen in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.
Built between 1353 and 1363 by Count Johann I of Nassau-Weilburg through knight Daniel von Langenau to control vital trade routes like the Kemel-Limburger and Hessen streets, it features an innovative multi-gate system—up to six entrances—thick walls hugging the rock edges, a former bergfried tower, palas hall, and inner courtyard once linked by bridges.
Partially Baroque-adapted from the late 17th to mid-18th century before partial collapse in 1979 due to geological shifts, its remnants now form a protected hiking destination with atmospheric views.
