Burg Hornburg
Germany, Germany
Burg Hornburg is a historic hilltop castle overlooking the town of Hornburg in Lower Saxony, Germany, serving as a key landmark and former border fortress of the Bishopric of Halberstadt.
First documented in 994 AD and possibly built in the early 9th century, it features an oval core castle about 40 by 100 meters, ring walls, a round bergfried tower with 3-meter-thick walls, and remnants of bastion towers after multiple destructions in 1113, 1179, and 1430, plus major damage in the Thirty Years' War in 1645.
Rebuilt in the 15th century as a fortress with seven corner towers and three ring walls, it later became private property in 1910 and partial residential use by 1922, though not publicly accessible today.
