Burg Hundeluft
Coswig, Germany, Germany
Burg Hundeluft is the ruin of a medieval water castle in Hundeluft, a district of Coswig (Anhalt) in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, first documented in 1280 when captured by Brandenburg margraves from Magdeburg's archbishop, strategically positioned to guard a trade route and Rossel River crossing amid swamps.
By 1405 under robber baron Johann von Quitzow and his allies the Walwitz brothers, it became a notorious base for raids and toll extortion on the Brandenburg-Saxony border until Prince Albrecht of Zerbst stormed it after a one-day siege on February 8, 1414, driving out the occupants.
Destroyed in the Thirty Years' War and dismantled in the late 18th century for local building materials after sale to Anhalt-Zerbst in 1735, only scattered stones and a 2-meter erratic wall remain on the former pentagonal Hauptburg island with double moats, now a park-like event site.
