Burg Hunolstein
Morbach, Germany, Germany
Burg Hunolstein is a 12th-century ruined hill castle in Hunolstein, part of Morbach municipality in Germany's Hunsrück region, Rhineland-Palatinate.
Built around 1190 by Count Follmar II of Blieskastel and held as a fief by the Vogt family of Hunolstein from 1192, it served as their ancestral seat—legendarily tied to the Nibelung figure Hunold—until the main line died out in 1487, reverting to Trier archbishopric control.
Damaged by Franz von Sickingen's troops in 1522 and further ravaged by French and Swedish forces during the Thirty Years' War around 1635-1637, it was definitively destroyed in 1689 during the War of the Palatine Succession, leaving remnants like a round corner tower and 1.3-meter-thick ring walls now owned by Morbach since 1952.
