Burg Jesberg
Germany, Germany
Burgruine Jesberg is a medieval hill castle ruin towering over the town of Jesberg in northern Hesse, Germany, first mentioned in 1241 after construction began in the late 12th or early 13th century by the von Linsingen family.
Sold to the Archbishopric of Mainz that year, it became a key stronghold alongside Naumburg and Fritzlar in conflicts against the Landgraves of Hesse, featuring a Romanesque bergfried tower with 2.5-meter-thick walls, remnants of ring walls, a palas cellar, and multiple towers across an outer and inner bailey.
Damaged in the 1469 Hessian Fratricidal War, rebuilt in 1524, and abandoned after Hessian control in 1586, the site was stabilized between 1980 and 1987, now offering an observation platform, hiking trails, and panoramic views as a local landmark.
