Burg Katz
Sankt Goarshausen, Germany, Germany
Burg Katz above Sankt Goarshausen in Germany's UNESCO-listed Middle Rhine Valley was built between 1360 and 1371 by Count Wilhelm II von Katzenelnbogen as a toll fortress named "Neu-Katzenelnbogen," earning its folk nickname "Cat" after Wilhelm quipped it would easily catch the nearby Trier-built Burg Maus ("Mouse").
Expanded in 1395 and forming a defensive belt with Rheinfels and Reichenberg under Hessian rule from 1479, it withstood Thirty Years' War sieges—including a 1626 bombardment damaging its bergfried—before French forces under Napoleon demolished it in 1806.
Rebuilt 1896-1898 as a neo-medieval residence by Landrat Ferdinand Berg incorporating original walls and the ruined tower, the privately owned castle remains closed to visitors today.
